Lapu-Lapu statue in Luneta (Rizal Park)

This is a monument commemorating one of the Philippines’ national heroes, Lapu-Lapu.

Lapu-Lapu was the datu of Mactan who resisted Spanish colonization. Armed with spears, kampilan and kalasag, he and his men faced Spanish soldiers led by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

He is regarded as the first Filipino hero.
